Figure 1: KERN PCD 6K-4 Precision Laboratory Balance
This image shows the KERN PCD 6K-4 precision laboratory balance. It consists of a square weighing platform with a stainless steel surface, connected by a cable to a separate digital display unit. The display unit features a large digital readout, along with buttons for ON/OFF, MODE/CAL, SET/M, PRINT, and TARE. The display indicates a maximum capacity of 3500g and a readability of 0.01g, though the model is 6K-4 (6000g max). The separate design is ideal for use in specialized environments like glove-bags.
4. Setup
- Kuiswa: Place the weighing platform and display unit on a stable, vibration-free, and level surface. Ensure sufficient space for operation and avoid direct sunlight, drafts, or significant temperature fluctuations.
- Gungano: Connect the cable from the weighing platform to the designated port on the digital display unit.
- Leveling: Use the adjustable foot bolts located on the underside of the weighing platform to level the balance. Observe the integrated spirit level (if present) to ensure precise horizontal alignment.
- Kudzivirira Mhepo: If your model includes a wind protection ring (for Ø 105 mm weighing plates), carefully place it around the weighing platform. This helps stabilize readings in environments with air currents.
- Power Connection: Connect the power adapter to the display unit and then plug it into a suitable power outlet.

- Carefully place the item to be weighed onto the center of the weighing platform.
- Wait for the display to stabilize. The stable weight will be shown.
- Remove the item from the platform.
5.3 TARE Function
The TARE function allows you to subtract the weight of a container, so only the net weight of the contents is displayed.
- Place the empty container onto the weighing platform. The display will show its weight.
- Press the TENDA button. The display will reset to 0.00g.
- Add the substance to be weighed into the container. The display will show the net weight of the substance.
The balance also features a PRE-TARE function for manual entry of a known container weight. Consult the full manual for detailed instructions on using PRE-TARE, typically accessed via the MODE/CAL or SET/M button in specific modes.
5.4 Unit Selection / Mode
Press the MODE/CAL button to cycle through available weighing units (e.g., grams, kilograms, pounds, ounces) or to enter different operating modes. Refer to the full manual for a list of supported units and mode functions.
